Steven Levitt’s “Daughter Test” for Paternalistic Policies

http://volokh.com/2011/05/20/steven-levitts-daughter-test-for-paternalistic-policies/

Levitt’s “daughter test” is useful, however, in highlighting an important aspect of paternalism. Many of its advocates, including some sophisticated scholars such as Levitt, too readily generalize from their own personal values and use those preferences as justification for prohibitionist policies.

As economist David Henderson points out, this displays intolerance towards others with different values. What is best for me — or my daughter — may not be best for everyone. Whether the costs of a risky activity outweigh the benefits varies greatly from person to person.

Poverty Study Guide

This eight-page study guide was distributed to students who attended FEE and Economic Thinking seminars and presentations on the current NFL debate topic calling for increases social services for those living in poverty. These articles suggest that current state and federal regulations, mixed with mismanaged social services, tend to make life worse for the those living in poverty in the U.S.

State Liquor Prohibition

“When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, the federal government gave states the power to regulate sales. Some states chose more-active roles than others, believing that operating distributorships or stores could help control consumption and mitigate social consequences.

The privatization faces resistance from religious groups, labor unions and mom-and-pop shops, suggesting how economics are trumping other concerns in the struggle to overcome the recession.”

The Nutrition Police March On

The Nutrition Police March On

The Obama administration will begin a drive this week to expel Pepsi, French fries and Snickers bars from the nation’s schools in hopes of reducing the number of children who get fat during their school years.

I cannot imagine that such efforts will yield results; kids have too many ways to circumvent these restrictions.

Instead, what about health insurance premiums that increase with weight above the “healthy” threshold?

Public Bans on Private Actions

“Societies rise or fall depending on how civil its citizens are. The more they associate voluntarily, the safer and more prosperous they are. The more they rely on force — legal or not — the more pliant they are in the hands of demagogues and tyrants. So resisting the statist impulse is no trivial issue. It is nothing less than the adult thing to do.”
