Willingness to Pay for Public Goods
Posted: March 25, 2010 Filed under: Public Goods Leave a comment »“In a choice experiment study, willingness to pay for a public good estimated from hypothetical choices was three times as large as willingness to pay estimated from choices requiring actual payment. This hypothetical bias was related to the stated level of certainty of respondents. We develop protocols to measure respondent certainty in the context of a choice experiment, and to calibrate hypothetical choices using these certainty measures. While both the measurement of respondent certainty and the use of certainty measures to calibrate responses arecomplicated by the multiple-choice nature of choice experiments, calibration successfully mitigated hypothetical bias in this application.”

Ostracism and the provision of a public good: experimental evidence
Posted: March 3, 2010 Filed under: Endogenous Rules, Ostracism, Public Goods Leave a comment »“We analyze the effects of ostracism on cooperation in a linear public good experiment with fixed partner design. Our results show that introducing ostracism increases contribution levels significantly except in first and last periods. Despite reductions in group size due to ostracism, the net effect on earnings is positive. This effect is in contrast to most alternative mechanisms aimed at increasing cooperation rates studied in the literature on public good experiments.”
